About Kiboko Odyssey
A small family-run Tanzania safari company based in Arusha, planning private safaris with care and local knowledge.
A small local team, planning safaris with care
Kiboko Odyssey Safari is a small family-owned safari company based in Arusha, Northern Tanzania, specializing in private safaris across the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit.
We work closely with a limited number of travelers each year so we can take the time to plan each safari properly and guide every journey with care.
We are not a high-volume tour operator, and we do not aim to be. Our focus is on thoughtful safari planning, honest guidance, and creating journeys that feel personal rather than packaged.
How Kiboko Odyssey Safari Began
William grew up near Tarangire. His family has been connected to safari guiding for generations — his brother Pius works with the company today, and between them they carry decades of experience in Tanzania’s national parks.
Both are what you might call old school: the kind of drivers who know every track without a map, read the landscape by instinct rather than radio, and can put their hands on a mechanical engine when something goes wrong in the middle of the Serengeti.
In 2015, he was guiding a safari for Giulia — a travel designer who had been working with local operators across Africa and the Galapagos.
On the last evening of the trip, sitting near the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, she said something simple: “Why don’t you start your own company? You’re good at this.”
The name was William’s choice — and a surprise. Kiboko means hippopotamus in Swahili. He knew Giulia had always had a soft spot for them. When he told her what he had decided to call the company, she had no objections.
That was where Kiboko began.
The idea was not complicated. William knew the parks. He knew how to plan a safari that made sense — realistic distances, the right pace, lodges in the right positions.
He knew what travelers needed to understand before they arrived, and what they would remember long after they left. Kiboko was built around that knowledge. Not a large operation, not a high-volume company. A small team, doing one thing well.

Our Approach to Safari Travel
We believe a Tanzania safari is not about seeing as many parks or animals as possible. It is about understanding where you are, traveling at a natural pace, and feeling supported throughout the journey.
Before we design anything, we explain how safari travel actually works — the distances, the seasons, the trade-offs between parks. Most travelers planning their first safari have questions they don’t know how to ask yet. We start there.
The itineraries we build avoid rushed schedules and unnecessary driving. A safari that moves too fast stops being a safari. It becomes a checklist.
Being a small company is not a limitation — it is the reason we can stay personally involved in every journey we organize. When you travel with Kiboko, someone who knows your itinerary is reachable. Not a booking system. A person.
A Local Tanzanian Team on the Ground
Kiboko Odyssey Safari is entirely based in Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Tanzania Safari Circuit.
Our team has grown up with the landscapes where we work — not studied them from a distance. We know the national parks through daily experience: the seasons, the roads, the way conditions shift between months and years.
We know which areas of the Serengeti make sense at different times of year, how long transfers actually take on unpaved roads, and what to expect when plans need to change.
This is not knowledge you find on a website. It comes from being here, year after year, and from a family history rooted in these landscapes. When you travel with Kiboko, you are supported by people who live and work in Tanzania every day — not just when a safari is running.
Who We Are a Good Fit For
Kiboko Odyssey Safari is best suited for travelers planning a private Tanzania safari who value personal attention during both the planning process and the journey itself.
We work particularly well with travelers who:
- are planning their first safari in Tanzania
- prefer a calm and unrushed travel experience
- appreciate local knowledge and honest advice
- want a safari itinerary adapted to their interests and pace
Our safaris are private and fully customizable, allowing each journey to reflect the traveler rather than a pre-designed package.
When We May Not Be the Right Fit
Because Kiboko Odyssey Safari is intentionally a small company, there are some types of travel we do not focus on. We do not operate scheduled group safaris or shared departures.
Travelers specifically looking to join large group tours to reduce costs may find better options with operators who specialize in high-volume group travel.
We may also not be the best match for travelers looking for:
- fixed, one-size-fits-all itineraries
- very fast-paced schedules covering many parks
- purely price-driven bookings without a planning discussion
Being open about this helps ensure that the safaris we organize are a good fit for both our travelers and our team.
